Birch multiply vs standard engineered: what actually differs?
Birch Multiply vs Standard Engineered: What Actually Differs
Oak by Woodez | For designers, architects and builders
Two engineered oak floors can look identical on a showroom wall. Same species, same colour, same finish. The difference is underneath, in the part you never see once the floor is down, and it decides how the floor behaves through humidity swings, heavy traffic and decades of use.
This guide explains what separates a Birch multiply board from a standard engineered board, where it matters on a project, and how to compare any two products on paper.
What "engineered" actually means
An engineered board is a layer of real oak bonded to a core. The oak veneer is what you see and touch. The core is what controls how the board moves, holds fixings and survives site conditions.
That means "engineered oak" tells you very little by itself. The core construction is the real specification.
What is in a standard engineered board
Cores vary widely across the market. Common constructions include softwood strips set crosswise, HDF (high-density fibreboard), or a small number of thick plies of mixed-grade timber.
Many of these perform well when well made. The point is that quality varies a lot, and it is hard to judge from the surface. Fewer, thicker layers and inconsistent core density are the usual weak points, because they leave more room for a board to cup, gap or lift at the edges as moisture levels change.
What is in an Oak by Woodez board
Every Oak by Woodez board is built on a European Birch plywood base, topped with a 4mm European Oak veneer, wire brushed and finished with WOCA UV hardwax oil.
Multiply means many thin plies of Birch, each laid at right angles to the one below and bonded together. Birch is a dense, fine-grained hardwood, and plywood made from it has a consistent structure from edge to edge.
Why that matters on a project
Dimensional stability. Cross-laminating thin plies restrains the natural movement of timber. Each layer holds the next one in check, which reduces cupping, gapping and warping as humidity changes.
Resistance to delamination. A consistent, dense core bonds evenly across its full thickness. That gives the board greater structural integrity over time, which is what the 25-year structural warranty is built on.
Reliable fixing. A uniform Birch core holds adhesive and fixings well. Our straightboards, for example, can be direct stick, glued and secret nailed, or floated, which gives builders and installers flexibility to suit the subfloor.
Large and complex formats. Herringbone and chevron (600 x 120 x 15mm) expose every joint, so any movement in a single board is visible across the whole pattern. A stable core matters most in exactly these layouts.
A usable wear layer. A 4mm oak veneer gives you real timber to work with. The floor can be sanded back and refinished over its life, rather than replaced, when refinishing is done properly by a professional.

What it does not change
A better core is not a licence to ignore site conditions. No engineered floor is immune to moisture. A Birch multiply floor still needs a subfloor within tolerance, proper acclimatisation and installation to the manufacturer's guide. Oak is also a natural product, so variation in grain, texture, knots and colour is expected and part of its character.
How to compare any two engineered floors
When you are specifying, ask every supplier for the same things:
- Core material and construction, including number and thickness of layers
- Wear layer thickness
- Finish type and recoating requirements
- Warranty terms, and what is excluded
- Approved installation methods
- Emissions certification
- A physical sample and the full spec sheet
If a supplier cannot answer these clearly, that tells you something about the board.
